If a book should not be judged by its cover, no author should be judged by the title of his book. I am not sure that principle necessarily follows, but I do hope people will not judge me by the title of this work. I have not named this book in my honour. Nor in the honour of my family, nor anyone in my family. So please, do not put the book down before finding out why it is called The Solomon Doctrine. The title is not a personal manifesto. But I cannot tell you now, why I have chosen this title. It is something that you must read for yourself in what follows. And I certainly hope that you will do so.

I urge you not to judge this book, “The Solomon Doctrine,” merely by its title. It’s not a self-tribute or a manifesto; the significance of the title is something I reveal within the pages, a discovery I invite you to make. This plea sets the tone for a journey that goes beyond initial perceptions, urging you to engage with the text on a deeper level.

Reflecting on the crisis within the Church, I grapple with the stark contrast between the Church’s divine promises of indefatigability and infallibility and the harsh reality of its diminishing influence and membership in the Western world. This dissonance between faith and observable facts not only confuses but deeply saddens me, pushing me towards an introspective examination of where belief meets reality.

The debate over the Church’s current predicament, especially the sensitive issue of sexual abuse, divides opinion among Catholics. Some argue that outdated sexual teachings are to blame, while others, including myself, see a failure to counter the permissive ethos of the 1960s. This internal conflict underscores a broader quest for understanding and rectification of the Church’s direction, a task I leave for future generations endowed with the clarity of detachment.

This book compiles sermons intended to address the malaise of Western Civilisation through faith, not as an academic work but as spiritual guidance. These sermons, deeply rooted in specific historical contexts and designed for oral delivery, retain their original form to preserve their intended essence. Through them, I aim to shed light on the path forward, identifying the “light” amidst the “darkness” of contemporary challenges, offering hope and guidance for those of us navigating these turbulent times.
